Changes in hair are among the concerns frequently reported by women during the menopausal transition, partly because they can have a noticeable effect on appearance. This is something we often see when assessing patients with female hair loss. The fall in oestrogen levels may be associated with miniaturisation of the hair fibre, making the hair appear less dense because individual hairs become finer, regardless of whether there is an increase in shedding.

From a cosmetic perspective, haircuts and styling techniques that add volume, together with products that temporarily increase the apparent thickness of the hair shaft, may help improve its appearance.

As with the skin, the hair fibre can also become drier and lose some of its shine, partly because of changes affecting the cuticle surrounding each hair shaft. Conditioning masks, serums and other haircare products designed to restore moisture may therefore help improve the appearance, softness and shine of the hair.

Does hair loss increase during menopause?

Patients frequently ask why menopause and hair loss are linked. Oestrogens have an important influence on the hair cycle. As their levels decline during menopause, changes in hair growth and density may become more apparent. At the same time, the relative influence of androgens may become more noticeable. These hormones play an important role in androgenetic alopecia.

In women, androgenetic or female pattern hair loss generally presents differently from the pattern typically seen in men. Rather than progressing to complete hair loss in affected areas, women more commonly develop a gradual reduction in density, increased scalp visibility and finer, more fragile hair. Some patients may also notice recession around the temples and reduced density over the crown.

The important point is that hair loss associated with menopause can be assessed and treated. There are currently several therapeutic options, and treatment should be selected according to the type of hair loss, its severity and the individual characteristics of each patient.

<img decoding="async" width="980" height="500" src="https://grupopedrojaen.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/caida-cabello-menopausia-01.jpg" alt="Does hair loss increase during menopause? It belongs to the group of scarring alopecias, in which inflammation progressively damages and destroys the hair follicle. Once a follicle has been permanently replaced by scar tissue, hair cannot regrow from that follicle.

Frontal fibrosing alopecia typically causes recession of the frontal and temporal hairline, often in a band-like pattern. It may also affect the eyebrows and eyelashes and, in some patients, hair in other areas of the body. Some people also experience itching, discomfort or pain affecting the scalp. The condition therefore causes progressive recession of the hairline, which can have a significant effect on appearance.

Although frontal fibrosing alopecia was considered relatively uncommon in the past, more cases have been recognised in recent years. Its exact cause is not yet fully understood. Current research suggests that hormonal factors and immune-mediated inflammation may both contribute to damage of the hair follicle.

Most cases occur sporadically, although familial cases have also been reported.

Frontal fibrosing alopecia most commonly affects women after menopause, although it can also occur before menopause and in men.

Because it is a scarring alopecia, it was traditionally viewed as a condition with very limited treatment options. Today, however, several treatments may be combined with the aim of controlling inflammation and stabilising progression. In selected patients, some degree of improvement or limited regrowth close to the hairline may also be observed, particularly when treatment is started before extensive irreversible follicular damage has occurred.

Treatment for frontal fibrosing alopecia must be individualised according to factors such as the extent of hair loss, evidence of inflammatory activity and the characteristics of the scalp. Early assessment by a dermatologist expert in hair disorders is particularly important in suspected scarring alopecia because treatment is primarily aimed at preventing further irreversible follicular loss.

We invite you to share this article about menopause and hair loss with family and friends who may find it useful.

[et_pb_section fb_built=”1″ _builder_version=”4.17.6″ _module_preset=”0399be55-07e9-4778-8676-33277500c29f” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.17.6″ _module_preset=”92704f8c-a4af-4de2-89c5-b36fbfb93efe” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.17.6″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_toggle title=”Authorship and references” content_last_edited=”off|desktop” admin_label=”Conmutador Blog” _builder_version=”4.19.4″ _module_preset=”8290cd9a-135d-4f2a-add0-c89f836c0146″ hover_enabled=”0″ locked=”off” global_colors_info=”{}” sticky_enabled=”0″]
The content of this article has been prepared by the Grupo Pedro Jaén Communications Department and Medical Team in accordance with our editorial commitment, which ensures the accuracy and regular updating of the information provided.

References on menopause and hair loss:

1.
