The research, led by Dr David Saceda, highlights the importance of controlling inflammation in order to help limit the progression of frontal fibrosing alopecia, a form of scarring alopecia increasingly seen in clinical practice.

What did the published study on frontal fibrosing alopecia investigate?

Frontal fibrosing alopecia is an inflammatory form of scarring alopecia in which the hair follicles are progressively destroyed and replaced by scar tissue, leading to gradual recession of the hairline. This study investigated the relationship between active inflammation and progression of frontal fibrosing alopecia. Data were collected from more than 60 patients who had been followed medically for at least three years.

How was the association between inflammation and progression of frontal fibrosing alopecia studied?

To assess inflammatory activity and disease progression, the research team used the Frontal Fibrosing Alopecia Severity Score (FFASS). This is a systematic method for assessing the severity of frontal fibrosing alopecia, which had previously been developed and validated by members of our team and published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology.

Inflammation was assessed using standardised digital trichoscopy, which can identify microscopic signs around the hair follicles such as scaling and erythema. Progression or stabilisation of the alopecia was evaluated through systematic measurements using anatomical reference points.

What were the conclusions of the Grupo Pedro Jaén study?

The study found an association between clinically observed active inflammation and progression of frontal fibrosing alopecia in most cases. Many patients whose alopecia did not progress were those in whom inflammatory activity had been controlled during the early medical visits using oral, topical and injectable treatments.

However, this relationship was not present in every patient. A significant group, approximately 25–30%, showed stabilisation of the alopecia despite signs of inflammation on trichoscopy. Conversely, some patients showed progression of hairline recession despite having no visible signs of inflammatory activity.

How does this apply to everyday clinical practice?

The study provides clinically relevant information for our specialists in the treatment of frontal fibrosing alopecia. First, it highlights the importance of systematic follow-up using trichoscopy and photographic monitoring in patients with frontal fibrosing alopecia. Second, the findings support the importance of controlling inflammatory activity with treatments that may include topical therapies, such as lotions or foams, and intralesional triamcinolone, according to the characteristics of each patient. Third, the study shows that the absence of visible inflammation does not necessarily mean that the disease is stable. A minority of patients may continue to experience progression even when no superficial inflammatory signs are detected. For this reason, assessment should combine inflammatory activity with objective monitoring of hairline progression over time.

We invite you to share the results of this study on the association between inflammation and progression of frontal fibrosing alopecia with family and friends who may find them useful.

[et_pb_section fb_built=”1″ _builder_version=”4.17.6″ _module_preset=”0399be55-07e9-4778-8676-33277500c29f” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.17.6″ _module_preset=”92704f8c-a4af-4de2-89c5-b36fbfb93efe” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.17.6″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_toggle title=”Authorship and references” content_last_edited=”off|desktop” admin_label=”Conmutador Blog” _builder_version=”4.17.6″ _module_preset=”8290cd9a-135d-4f2a-add0-c89f836c0146″ hover_enabled=”0″ locked=”off” global_colors_info=”{}” sticky_enabled=”0″]
The content of this article has been prepared by the Grupo Pedro Jaén Communications Department and Medical Team in accordance with our editorial commitment, which ensures the accuracy and regular updating of the information provided.

References:

1.
