These factors can contribute to dryness, irritation or scaling in any skin type, but people with sensitive skin may experience them more readily.

Skin barrier function also plays an important role.

The outermost layer of the epidermis, particularly the stratum corneum, helps limit water loss and protects the skin from external irritants and environmental exposure. When this barrier is impaired, the skin may become more susceptible to dryness and irritation.

Summer habits and sensitive skin

Some summer habits may also influence skin symptoms. Alcohol, spicy foods, heat and hot drinks can trigger flushing or discomfort in some people, particularly those with conditions such as rosacea, although these effects vary considerably between individuals.

Swimming pool chlorine, seawater and sand can also irritate or dry the skin, especially when exposure is prolonged or the skin barrier is already compromised.

Tips for caring for sensitive skin in summer

Pay particular attention to sun protection

Sun protection is important for everyone and especially relevant for people whose skin becomes irritated easily. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a high SPF, usually SPF 30 or above, and reapply it appropriately during prolonged outdoor exposure. People with sensitive skin often tolerate simple, fragrance-free formulations well. Mineral sunscreens containing ingredients such as zinc oxide or titanium dioxide may suit some patients, but they are not necessarily superior for every person with sensitive skin. The most appropriate sunscreen is one that provides adequate protection and is well tolerated.

Sunscreen should also be combined with other protective measures, including:

seeking shade;
wearing suitable clothing;
using a hat;
avoiding unnecessarily prolonged exposure to intense midday sun.

Be aware of air conditioning

Air-conditioned environments can be dry and may contribute to a feeling of tightness or dryness in some people. Avoid sitting directly in a strong flow of cold air for long periods and maintain an indoor temperature that feels comfortable. Regular use of an appropriate moisturiser can help if air-conditioned environments make the skin feel dry.

Maintain skin hydration

Regular moisturising can help reduce dryness, tightness and scaling. Choose products formulated for sensitive skin and preferably without fragrance if you know that fragranced products cause irritation. Adequate fluid intake is important for general health, particularly in hot weather, although drinking additional water beyond normal hydration requirements does not directly moisturise the outer layers of the skin. Thermal water sprays may feel soothing or refreshing for some people, although they should not replace moisturisers designed to reduce water loss through the skin.

Avoid excessively long periods in the water

Long periods in swimming pools or the sea can contribute to dryness or irritation in susceptible skin. There is no fixed maximum bathing time for everyone, but reducing prolonged exposure may help if symptoms tend to worsen after swimming.

Rinse the skin after swimming

After swimming in a pool or the sea, rinsing the skin with fresh water can help remove chlorine, salt and other residues. Dry the skin gently and apply an appropriate moisturiser. If you remain outdoors, remember to reapply sunscreen after swimming and towel drying.

Protect your skin during outdoor activities

Summer activities such as walking, hiking, climbing and sightseeing

can involve prolonged exposure to sun, heat, wind and sweat.

Use adequate photoprotection and wear lightweight, breathable clothing.

If sweat tends to irritate your skin, changing out of damp clothing and gently drying affected areas can help reduce prolonged contact.

Keep showers gentle

During hot weather, people often shower more frequently. For sensitive skin, it is generally advisable to:
keep showers relatively short;
use lukewarm rather than very hot water;
avoid vigorous scrubbing;
pat the skin dry with a soft towel rather than rubbing;
apply moisturiser after showering.

Choose a mild soap-free or syndet cleanser where appropriate. The objective is not to avoid all surfactants, but to use cleansing products that effectively clean the skin without unnecessarily disrupting the barrier.

Cosmetics for sensitive skin in summer

Using products that are poorly tolerated can contribute to irritation in people with sensitive skin. For this reason, it is advisable to follow the recommendations of a dermatologist specialising in sensitive skin and avoid making multiple unnecessary changes to a skincare routine simply because you are on holiday. Labels such as ‘hypoallergenic’ can be helpful as product descriptions, but they do not guarantee that a reaction cannot occur. It is also not necessary for every person with sensitive skin to avoid parabens, as these preservatives are generally well tolerated and can help prevent microbial contamination of cosmetic products. Useful recommendations include:

choose simple, well-tolerated formulations, preferably fragrance-free if fragrances tend to irritate your skin;

use mild, soap-free cleansers when appropriate;
use a gentle shampoo if your scalp is also sensitive;

if you wear make-up, choose products that you already tolerate well and check that they have not expired or become contaminated;

remove make-up gently without excessive rubbing;

continue using the moisturiser recommended for your skin and apply it as often as needed to control dryness.

Be cautious with certain beauty treatments

Summer is sometimes a period when people experiment with new cosmetic routines or aesthetic treatments. If your skin is particularly reactive, strong exfoliation, dermabrasion and some chemical peels can worsen irritation, especially when the skin barrier is already compromised.

The same applies to potentially irritating active ingredients such as retinoids or glycolic acid. However, these ingredients are not automatically unsuitable for everyone with sensitive skin. Whether they can be used depends on the individual’s diagnosis, skin tolerance, concentration, formulation and frequency of application. If your skin is already irritated, prioritising barrier-supportive moisturising and gentle skincare is usually more appropriate than introducing new active ingredients. If symptoms are persistent, severe or accompanied by visible inflammation, a dermatological assessment can help determine whether the problem is sensitive skin itself or an underlying condition such as rosacea, atopic dermatitis or contact dermatitis.

We invite you to share this article on caring for sensitive skin in summer with family and friends who may find it useful.

[et_pb_section fb_built=”1″ _builder_version=”4.17.6″ _module_preset=”0399be55-07e9-4778-8676-33277500c29f” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.17.6″ _module_preset=”92704f8c-a4af-4de2-89c5-b36fbfb93efe” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.17.6″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_toggle title=”Authorship and references” content_last_edited=”off|desktop” admin_label=”Conmutador Blog” _builder_version=”4.17.6″ _module_preset=”8290cd9a-135d-4f2a-add0-c89f836c0146″ hover_enabled=”0″ locked=”off” global_colors_info=”{}” sticky_enabled=”0″]
The content of this article has been prepared by the Grupo Pedro Jaén Communications Department and Medical Team in accordance with our editorial commitment, which ensures the accuracy and regular updating of the information provided.

References:

1.
