Dermocosmetic analysis and advice

Information about dermocosmetics

To support the dermatologist’s work and obtain objective data that contribute to designing the safest and most effective skincare routines, the Complementary Aesthetics Unit carries out dermocosmetic analysis using the most advanced technology available on the market.

These systems allow us to obtain comprehensive and precise information about the characteristics of the skin at each stage of its evolution. All measurements are non-invasive and therefore have no side effects.

Information about dermocosmetics

Confocal microscopy

This technology enables detailed visualisation of the different layers of the skin with an extremely high level of precision, making it possible to observe individual cells and blood vessels. This allows for an exhaustive analysis of predominant skin alterations, including early changes that may not yet have a clinical manifestation. Confocal microscopy helps determine whether photoageing is mild, moderate or severe, based on the degree of structural disruption observed in the epidermal layer, vascular alterations at the dermo-epidermal junction, or the amount of residual matrix in the upper dermis.

Given the increased risk of skin cancer associated with severe photoageing, our specialists pay particular attention to this type of skin. When precancerous lesions or findings suggestive of skin cancer are detected, patients are referred to our Skin Cancer Unit for further evaluation and appropriate treatment.

Polarised light photographic analysis

This advanced photographic system enables comprehensive digital analysis using different image capture techniques. High-resolution photography combined with polarised light images highlights vascular structures and anomalies characteristic of photoaged skin, as well as pigmentation disorders such as brown spots—both visible to the naked eye and those still in early stages.

Assessment of skin firmness: Cutometer

A non-invasive tool consisting of a probe that evaluates skin firmness—based on resistance to suction—and elasticity, defined as the skin’s ability to return to its original state. As firmness and elasticity decrease with ageing, this device helps identify which skin types will benefit most from tightening and firming treatments and which may require more invasive complementary procedures.

Assessment of skin hydration: Corneometer

This measurement is performed using a device equipped with a sensor that quickly and painlessly provides precise information on skin hydration levels, mainly based on transepidermal water loss. Sensitive, reactive or dehydrated skin, as well as skin affected by advanced photoageing, often shows dehydration. This technology allows us to objectively assess its severity and determine whether prescribed treatments—products, in-clinic procedures or techniques—are sufficient or need to be intensified at certain stages.

Measurement of skin oil levels: Sebumeter

This device enables rapid measurement of sebum production and presence on the skin surface. It is useful for distinguishing between skin that is dry due to low sebum production and skin that appears dry but maintains normal sebum levels, where the primary issue is dehydration.

It also allows identification of oilier areas in combination skin types, where sebum production is uneven. This technology enables precise monitoring of the effectiveness of seboregulating treatments prescribed by the dermatologist, as it detects even minimal changes in skin sebum content and allows cosmetic care recommendations to be adjusted with maximum accuracy.

Ultrasound

Cutaneous ultrasound is a painless imaging technique based on the emission and reception of ultrasound waves. Its use provides an objective assessment of facial ageing, as it allows measurement of the thickness of the different skin layers—epidermis, dermis and subcutaneous tissue—which tend to become thinner over time.

Ultrasound is also a key technique for the evaluation of facial filler materials. It enables identification of the type of material used and its precise location, which may change over time and require treatment at our Filler Complications Unit.
