Specialist dermatologists in hair disorders
Hair disorders represent a subspecialised field within dermatology focused on the study and management of hair and scalp conditions. The Hair Disorders Unit of Grupo Pedro Jaén brings together a highly specialised medical team and state-of-the-art technology to provide excellence in the diagnosis and treatment of hair loss, the different forms of alopecia and other hair disorders. More than 100 distinct types of alopecia have been described to date, making accurate diagnosis essential in order to select the most appropriate and effective treatment for each patient.
Within the Hair Disorders Unit, we also have a Hair Transplant Surgery Unit with extensive expertise in modern micrograft techniques, allowing natural restoration of hair density when clinically indicated.
Individualised diagnosis
The Hair Disorders and Hair Transplant Unit of Grupo Pedro Jaén is equipped with the most advanced technology available for the diagnosis of the more than 100 forms of alopecia currently recognised.
Using digital trichoscopy, our specialists can non-invasively assess hair follicle growth and detect structural and pathological changes of the scalp and hair fibres in exceptional detail. This technology also enables the creation of a standardised photographic record, facilitating case discussion and long-term follow-up by the multidisciplinary team.
We also use specialised systems to measure hair density and hair shaft diameter, key parameters for prescribing individualised medical treatments and for the comprehensive evaluation of candidates for hair transplantation.
In complex cases, those that do not respond adequately to initial treatment or require further investigation, cellular analysis of the hair may be indicated. This involves a scalp biopsy, a simple procedure in which a small sample of scalp skin containing hair follicles is obtained.
After specific sample preparation, our pathology specialists perform a detailed histological analysis, ensuring the highest diagnostic accuracy and reliability.
State-of-the-art treatments for alopecia
Our Hair Disorders and Hair Transplant Unit offers the most innovative treatment options, always grounded in scientific rigour and evidence-based medicine, often derived from research led directly by our dermatologists with expertise in hair loss and scalp health.
The unit is particularly recognised for the design of tailored pharmacological therapies, used alone or in combination with injectable treatments, laser-based therapies or bio-stimulation with autologous plasma.
In addition, the unit has extensive experience in advanced hair transplantation procedures, performed using the latest technology. Surgical treatment of alopecia is carried out in fully equipped operating theatres, supported by technical staff specifically trained in hair transplant surgery and with substantial experience in this field. This allows the selection of the most appropriate hair transplant technique for each patient, with the objective of maximising medium- and long-term success.
One of the distinguishing features of hair transplantation at Grupo Pedro Jaén is that procedures are performed under local anaesthesia with conscious sedation, enhancing intraoperative safety and minimising pain or discomfort for the patient.

Teaching activity
The Hair Disorders and Hair Transplant Unit of Grupo Pedro Jaén combines clinical care with teaching and research activities, both within our own centres and within the public healthcare system, specifically at Hospital Universitario Ramón y Cajal and the University of Alcalá de Henares, both in Madrid.
The unit coordinates the International Master’s Degree in Trichology and Hair Transplantation at the University of Alcalá, a postgraduate programme that has already trained hundreds of dermatologists from different countries.
In addition, the unit participates in the international Expert Course in Trichology, allowing dermatologists from around the world to attend clinical consultations through short fellowship programmes, gaining first-hand experience in the comprehensive medical approach to hair disorders. This has positioned Grupo Pedro Jaén as the leading international training centre in this subspecialty in Spain.
In 2019, the unit published the Practical Manual of Trichology (#tricoHRC), a reference textbook available in Spanish, English and Russian, which has become an essential resource for dermatologists interested in the diagnosis and treatment of alopecia.
