A guide to understanding eyebrow transplantation
Eyebrow transplantation shares many similarities with hair transplantation performed by specialists at the Grupo Pedro Jaén Hair Disorders and Hair Transplant Unit. The primary aim of this procedure is to restore the natural frame of the face by implanting healthy follicular units obtained from a donor area of the patient’s own body.
As with conventional hair transplantation, follicles used for eyebrow transplantation are typically harvested from the occipital region, as hair in this area is genetically resistant to alopecia. This characteristic is essential to ensure that transplanted follicular units take root successfully and are maintained in the medium and long term.
In men, follicles may also be harvested from other donor areas such as the arms, chest or beard, although this is not common practice. In all cases, the guiding principle for specialists performing eyebrow transplantation is to select donor follicles whose hair most closely resembles eyebrow hair, in order to achieve the most natural and aesthetically pleasing result possible.
Once the diagnosis has been established and surgery planned, on the day of the procedure a small area of the occipital region is shaved to allow follicular unit extraction. This area is subsequently closed so that it remains invisible and concealed beneath the surrounding hair.
Extracted follicles are implanted using the same technique employed in hair transplantation. In eyebrow transplantation, particular care must be taken to place follicles at the correct angle, ensuring that hair growth mimics that of natural eyebrows.
In addition, to respect eyebrow shape, inclination and design, a template is prepared in advance to guide the specialist during implantation. Eyebrow graft design is crucial to achieving a natural result that does not alter the patient’s facial features. Correct execution requires detailed knowledge of the anatomical differences between male and female facial structures.
In women, eyebrows are located above the orbital rim of the frontal bone and typically follow a curved, C-shaped arch. In men, eyebrows tend to be positioned slightly lower, are straighter and are commonly described as having a T-shaped configuration.
The procedure is performed under local anaesthesia to minimise discomfort during follicular extraction and implantation. It is an outpatient surgery, and patients are able to return home on their own after completion. As the treatment area is much smaller than that of scalp hair transplantation, the duration of eyebrow transplantation is also shorter, typically around three hours, although this may vary depending on the case.

Results
One advantage of eyebrow transplantation compared to scalp hair transplantation is that results become visible more quickly. Improvements following eyebrow grafting are usually noticeable between six and eight months after surgery, compared to approximately one year for conventional scalp hair transplantation.
Safety
With regard to risks and complications, eyebrow transplantation is generally a very safe procedure. This is largely because the implanted tissue is autologous, harvested from the patient, which promotes optimal integration into the recipient area, eliminates the risk of rejection and reduces the likelihood of poor graft survival in the medium and long term. This procedure is generally associated with few adverse effects, which are typically mild and may include pain, itching and frontal oedema.
These symptoms typically resolve within a few days with conventional analgesia and the application of local cold packs. Nevertheless, as with any surgical procedure, vigilance is required to detect less common but more serious complications, such as bleeding or infection. Potential complications associated with eyebrow transplantation are rare and are usually straightforward to manage, provided the procedure is performed by specialists with expertise in this type of surgery.
Recovery
Patients who undergo eyebrow transplantation should follow simple care guidelines, mainly consisting of avoiding sun exposure to facilitate healing and periodically trimming the transplanted hair to maintain a length consistent with natural eyebrows. This is necessary because, for a period of time, transplanted hair continues to grow at the same rate as it did when it originated from the scalp.
Duration
A common misconception is that eyebrow transplantation is not long-lasting because transplanted follicles eventually fall out. However, as with follicular micrografts implanted in the scalp, while some loss of density may occur due to shedding of pre-existing eyebrow hair, transplanted follicles themselves do not fall out once they have taken root.
