A guide to understanding hair mesotherapy
The Grupo Pedro Jaén Hair Disorders and Hair Transplant Unit has been involved in numerous research studies on hair mesotherapy using different active substances and is a pioneer in the use of this technique in Spain for the treatment of androgenetic alopecia in both men and women.
Microinjected medication
Treatments based on microinjections of medications for alopecia are administered in consultation two or three times a year. Prior to the procedure, local anaesthesia is applied to the scalp to minimise discomfort from the injections, although it is generally a minimally painful procedure.
These microinjections allow the medication to reach the hair root directly. This targeted delivery concentrates the treatment at the follicular level and reduces systemic absorption of the active substance, virtually eliminating the risk of side effects.
Each treatment session lasts approximately 20 minutes, and patients can resume their normal activities immediately afterwards, as no special post-treatment care is required.
Hair biostimulation
Hair biostimulation is one of the most commonly used treatments in specialised hair disorder consultations, given its usefulness in various types of alopecia. According to current evidence from multiple studies, this regenerative medicine–based treatment stimulates biological activity within the hair follicles, increasing their growth and proliferation. This effect not only promotes hair regrowth, but also increases the diameter of existing hair shafts with reduced thickness, improving overall hair quality.
For this reason, hair biostimulation is particularly useful in the treatment of androgenetic alopecia, other forms of alopecia such as alopecia areata, and as an adjunct to hair transplantation. Through this approach, we can improve graft survival rates and optimise the healing process following surgery.
Treatment of alopecia with hair biostimulation is usually combined with other hair loss therapies. It is typically administered two to four times per year, while other treatments are prescribed on a long-term basis.
A key advantage of hair biostimulation therapy is that it can be used in both men and women and, as it is an autologous treatment—derived from the patient’s own blood—it carries no risk of rejection or adverse reactions.
However, prior to treatment, a thorough clinical assessment is required, as hair biostimulation is contraindicated in patients with active cancer, severe coagulation disorders, active infections at the injection site, blood-borne infectious diseases or sarcoidosis.
