What it involves and indications

A guide to understanding treatments performed by oral and maxillofacial surgeons

Dental aesthetic treatments aim to improve the appearance of the teeth and their surrounding structures. Achieving this involves not only well-aligned, natural-looking teeth, but also healthy gums and an overall harmonious and healthy facial expression.
For this reason, dental aesthetics encompasses treatments focused both on improving appearance and on preserving oral health.

Implantology and pre-prosthetic surgery

Dental implants are used to replace teeth that have been lost for various reasons. The absence of one or more teeth has both aesthetic and functional consequences, affecting not only the appearance of the mouth and face, but also chewing, swallowing, digestion and even speech.

Tooth loss also alters the position of adjacent teeth and disrupts the balance of chewing forces, increasing uneven tooth wear and raising the likelihood of requiring orthodontic treatment to correct dental alignment.

Given the wide range of available procedures to restore missing teeth, leaving the oral cavity incomplete is not considered an appropriate option.

Dental implant placement is planned in advance using intraoral scanning to design the most suitable solution for each patient.

Treatment begins with the placement of a biocompatible titanium implant, designed to integrate with the jawbone. This implant acts as a support for the crown that replaces the original tooth. Crowns are manufactured taking into account the size, colour and position of the surrounding teeth to achieve the best possible functional and aesthetic outcome.

When a patient does not have sufficient bone volume to support a dental implant—a relatively common situation when a tooth has been missing for a long time—implant treatment must be complemented with pre-prosthetic surgical techniques aimed at restoring bone volume.

In these cases, the oral and maxillofacial surgeons of the Grupo Pedro Jaén Smile Aesthetics Unit perform bone grafting procedures using either the patient’s own bone or bone of animal origin when autologous grafting is not possible. These techniques promote adequate bone regeneration and support the proper integration of the dental implant.
