A guide to understanding CO₂ laser labiaplasty
CO₂ laser labiaplasty is a minimally invasive procedure designed to reduce and harmonise the size of the labia minora, improving vulvar contour and symmetry in a precise and controlled manner.
By means of laser vaporisation and excision, excess tissue is removed while blood vessels are simultaneously sealed. This allows accurate remodelling of the vulvar contour and significantly reduces intraoperative bleeding.
In selected cases, the procedure may also be applied to the labia majora to correct folds or tighten excessively lax tissue.
The treatment is performed in the operating theatre under local anaesthesia with sedation (although it may also be carried out under general anaesthesia when indicated). The procedure typically lasts between 45 and 60 minutes, depending on each case, and does not require hospital admission.
Once the vulvar tissue has been removed or reshaped, absorbable sutures are placed, and the patient returns home the same day with a personalised postoperative care plan.
Who is CO₂ laser labiaplasty indicated for
CO₂ laser labiaplasty is indicated for patients with hypertrophic or asymmetric labia minora who experience physical discomfort such as friction in the genital area, pressure or discomfort when wearing certain clothing, sitting, exercising, or pain during sexual intercourse.
It may also be an appropriate option for patients whose vulvar anatomy affects intimate relationships or emotional wellbeing.
Postoperative care after CO₂ laser labiaplasty
During the first few days, mild discomfort in the treated area is normal and can usually be controlled with standard analgesics.
Gentle intimate hygiene with lukewarm water is recommended, avoiding soaps or feminine hygiene products unless otherwise advised by the specialist.
The area should be dried gently, without rubbing, and kept clean and dry.
Cotton underwear should be worn for approximately four weeks.
Patients should avoid tight clothing, high-impact sports, horse riding, cycling, swimming pools and sea bathing for 4–6 weeks, or as advised by the specialist.
Genital sexual intercourse should be avoided during the same period or until clearance is given, depending on individual healing.
Although the rate of complications following this procedure is very low, adherence to these recommendations is important to minimise risks and ensure optimal recovery.
Advantages of CO₂ laser labiaplasty
CO₂ laser labiaplasty is associated with reduced intraoperative bleeding and a lower risk of postoperative haematoma and infection.
These factors contribute to a safer procedure, less postoperative discomfort and faster recovery compared with conventional techniques.
In a small proportion of cases, minor asymmetries may remain. When necessary, a refinement procedure can be performed after the healing period recommended by the specialist.
