Local anaesthesia and sedation

Although it is a minimally invasive technique, this treatment is usually performed under local anaesthesia and conscious sedation, as the insertion of the optical fibre beneath the skin and the delivery of laser energy at deep tissue levels may cause discomfort. In this way, pain is blocked and the patient remains relaxed and calm, while maintaining the ability to communicate if necessary.

Treatment that destroys diseased cells

Basically, the treatment consists of applying a photosensitising cream to the area of skin to be treated and then exposing it to a light source that triggers a photochemical reaction, destroying diseased cells without damaging healthy ones.

Reduction of potential discomfort

Although exposure to red light usually lasts around 10 minutes, discomfort typically begins at the start of the session and intensifies towards the end, discouraging many patients from completing the recommended protocol, especially when large areas need to be treated. In these cases, conscious sedation relieves pain during the session and helps patients overcome their fear of future sessions, thereby improving adherence to the treatment plan prescribed by the specialist.

The CO₂ laser improves the skin by inducing a controlled thermal injury that vaporises the most superficial layers of the skin, accelerating skin renewal. In addition, by generating heat in the subcutaneous tissues, it improves dermal vascularisation, stimulates collagen production and tightens the fibrous bands that connect the skin to the muscular planes, contributing to improved skin firmness and quality.

During the session, which may last between five and fifteen minutes depending on the treated area, patients usually experience an intense heat sensation, stinging or itching of variable intensity depending on the selected parameters, which in turn depend on the treatment goals defined for each patient. When topical anaesthesia is not sufficient, there is the option of performing this laser treatment under mild sedation, administered and monitored by an anaesthesiologist at all times, to avoid discomfort and facilitate patient recovery.
