La dermatoscopia consiste en una técnica no invasiva de diagnóstico de lunares y melanoma, que nos permite obtener una imagen muy aumentada de cada lunar, al tiempo que podemos percibir su estructura en profundidad. El aparato utilizado es el dermatoscopio, que emplea un sistema de magnificación de las lesiones, con una luz incidental que transilumina la piel y permite un aumento con el lente que va desde 10X – 50X.

Lesion monitoring

Digital dermoscopy also allows images to be recorded at each visit, making it possible to compare structural changes in a mole over time. It is a bloodless, safe and painless procedure with very high diagnostic accuracy. This significantly facilitates early detection of malignant transformation, leading to simpler and more effective surgical treatment when required. At the same time, digital dermoscopy helps to avoid unnecessary excision of atypical-looking moles that are ultimately benign. Its introduction represented a true breakthrough in the early diagnosis of melanoma. In this sense, the dermatoscope for the dermatologist is comparable to the stethoscope for the cardiologist.

Annual skin examinations

At least one annual dermoscopic evaluation of moles is recommended for monitoring purposes. Following the consultation, the dermatologist will decide whether digital dermoscopic mapping or other more advanced early-detection systems are required.

A dermatoscope allows the skin to be examined with greater precision and is an essential tool for differentiating between benign and malignant skin lesions. The examination, which may last between 10 and 60 minutes, consists of applying the dermatoscope directly to the lesions during the consultation. A direct visual analysis is performed of the different structures of the lesion or dermatological condition under assessment. Digital dermoscopy stores images in digital format, enabling highly accurate comparisons during future visits.

Effects

Digital dermoscopy is a non-invasive and completely safe technique. It does not cause adverse effects and has no contraindications. No special preparation is required before the examination, nor is any specific aftercare necessary.

Assessment

During the dermatology consultation, a full skin examination is usually offered to assess all moles. In addition to visual inspection, the dermatologist examines the lesions using dermoscopy, a non-invasive diagnostic technique that allows detailed visualisation of structures and patterns at high magnification, significantly improving diagnostic accuracy.

Recommendations

An annual dermoscopic examination is recommended.

Before the examination: We recommend attending with clean skin, free of make-up or other topical products.

After the examination: No special care is required. Depending on the findings, the dermatologist will advise on the most appropriate interval for follow-up, which may range from 3 to 12 months. You should seek medical advice sooner if you notice any suspicious changes, such as new moles, changes in existing moles, itching or bleeding.
