Fractional CO₂ laser

Fractional CO₂ laser is one of the most widely used technologies in dermatology for skin rejuvenation. It is used to improve skin texture and quality, reduce the appearance of enlarged pores and achieve a smoother, more even complexion. This technology has been used for many years, particularly in the treatment of scars and skin with cumulative sun damage, including pigmentation changes, fine wrinkles and loss of radiance. The specialists at the Grupo Pedro Jaén Laser Unit work with advanced fractional CO₂ laser systems and have extensive, proven clinical experience in their use.

How it works and indications

Information about CO₂ laser

Fractional CO₂ laser acts on two levels: superficially and at a deeper dermal level. Its mechanism of action consists of creating microscopic channels in the upper layers of the skin, producing controlled resurfacing that renews the skin surface. At the same time, it generates a deeper thermal effect that stimulates the production of new collagen.

Comprehensive facial rejuvenation

The traditional approach to skin rejuvenation with fractional CO₂ laser involves the use of moderate to high treatment intensities in order to achieve clinically significant results. This is associated with a recovery period of several days, during which the skin becomes red, a degree of inflammation may occur, and small blisters can develop. This is followed by peeling and the emergence of new skin that is smoother and more luminous.

At a deeper level, from the moment of treatment, this laser stimulates collagen and elastin production. Improvement is progressive and remains clinically significant for approximately four to six months, at which point the need for additional sessions may be assessed.

Flash effect with CO₂ laser

Newer and more versatile fractional CO₂ laser systems allow treatment at lower intensities. This makes it possible to adapt the procedure to younger patients, individuals without marked sun damage, or those seeking to improve skin appearance ahead of a specific event. In these cases, a mild rejuvenating effect — commonly referred to as a “flash effect” — can be achieved.

The intensity at which the fractional CO₂ laser is applied primarily affects recovery time, which can range from a few hours, with mild facial redness, to a maximum of 7–10 days.

Except when performed gently for an immediate cosmetic effect, fractional CO₂ laser is considered a seasonal procedure and should be avoided during periods of high sun exposure. After treatment, strict photoprotection measures must be followed to reduce the risk of pigmentation changes.

This treatment is generally well tolerated. To minimise discomfort, topical anaesthesia applied by the patient 30–60 minutes before the session is recommended.

Suitable for face and body

A fractional CO₂ laser session typically lasts between five and fifteen minutes, depending on the area treated. During the procedure, patients may experience a sensation of heat, stinging or itching, with intensity varying according to the treatment parameters selected and the therapeutic objectives defined for each patient.

When topical anaesthesia is not sufficient, this laser treatment can be performed in our Pain-Free Aesthetic Treatments Unit, using light conscious sedation. Sedation is administered and continuously monitored by an anaesthetist, helping to minimise discomfort and facilitate recovery.
