Indications, procedure and outcomes
A guide to understanding liposuction treatment
Liposuction is a surgical technique designed to remove localised fat deposits that are resistant to diet and physical exercise and tend to accumulate permanently in specific areas of the body. In addition to fat removal, the procedure reshapes the body contour to achieve a more harmonious and aesthetically balanced appearance.
This surgery can be performed on areas such as the double chin, arms, knees, saddlebags, abdomen, buttocks or ankles in patients who are within, or close to, their ideal weight range. Liposuction is therefore not a weight-loss treatment and is not indicated for patients with obesity.
Ideally, patients undergoing liposuction should have elastic, sufficiently firm skin. Once fat is removed, if there is a significant excess of skin, it may not redistribute properly, which can result in surface irregularities and increased skin laxity.
For this reason, the surgeons of the Grupo Pedro Jaén Plastic, Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgery Unit strongly recommend a thorough pre-operative consultation. This assessment allows us to evaluate the patient’s medical history and general health status, identify fat deposits suitable for removal, assess skin quality in order to anticipate the final result, and determine whether complementary treatments are required to optimise outcomes. These may include autologous fat grafting, skin-tightening systems, abdominoplasty or additional surgery to remove excess skin.
What does liposuction involve?
Liposuction is a major surgical procedure performed in an operating theatre under local anaesthesia with sedation when smaller fat deposits are being treated, or general anaesthesia when there is a larger volume of fat to be removed or when complementary procedures are required.
Fat removal is carried out using specialised surgical equipment fitted with cannulas of different diameters. These cannulas break up the fat and extract it from the body through aspiration. They are introduced through a small number of tiny incisions (approximately 3–4 millimetres) in order to minimise surgical trauma and avoid visible marks on the skin.
Through the cannula, a saline solution and medication are infiltrated to reduce blood loss and prevent pain during the procedure. A suction pump then safely and gently aspirates the fat through the cannula.
Once the procedure is completed, the cannula entry points are closed with a single surgical stitch and a compression dressing is applied to help eliminate fluids and promote reabsorption of bruising in the days following surgery. Post-operative discomfort, often described by patients as similar to muscle soreness, can be effectively managed with conventional anti-inflammatory medication and analgesics.
For the period indicated by the surgeon, patients must wear compression garments to improve results. However, they are usually able to return to normal daily activities after three to four days. Absolute rest is not recommended, as gentle physical activity helps to reduce swelling and accelerates tissue recovery.
In addition, the specialist may recommend complementary aesthetic treatments to enhance recovery, such as radiofrequency, manual lymphatic drainage, ultrasound therapy, drainage massages or pressotherapy. All of these treatments are available at our Beauty and Wellness Unit.
“In general, the best outcomes are achieved by combining different therapeutic options and intervening at an early stage”
Results
One of the main advantages of liposuction is that it is a definitive procedure: the fat cells that are removed do not regenerate. As a result, if the patient maintains a healthy lifestyle, the procedure does not need to be repeated in the same area. Although volume reduction is noticeable from the outset and becomes particularly evident after one month, the final results are usually seen between six and eight months after surgery, once swelling has fully subsided and the tissues have stabilised.
