The neck lift is an effective surgical technique to treat severe sagging, excess skin and loss of jaw definition. It’s a very popular procedure for those who want lasting, natural results.

The procedure repositions deep tissues and removes excess skin, restoring the neck’s natural firmness and the youthful contours of the face. The result is a balanced profile and a smoother transition between face and neck.
Natural and balanced results
Each procedure is individually planned according to the degree of sagging and the patient’s anatomy. It takes place in the operating theatre under local anaesthesia and sedation, which enables a gradual, controlled recovery. The result is a rejuvenated appearance that’s maintained over the long term without altering the patient’s natural expression.
Severe cases of flaccidity and sagging
The neck lift is the most effective option in cases of severe sagging, prominent platysmal bands running vertically down from the jawline, or excess skin that can’t be corrected by non-invasive treatments. There is no specific age at which a neck lift should be performed, as the sagging of the tissues is not associated exclusively with the passage of time.

This procedure is particularly suitable when the sagging skin on the neck and jawline blurs the facial contours and gives an aged appearance. It’s more common in patients over the age of 50 or after significant weight loss.
Ideal complement to other facial surgeries
The procedure can be performed independently or combined with a facelift, eyelid surgery or submental liposuction to achieve complete facial rejuvenation. This combination enables multiple signs of ageing to be tackled in a single procedure, restoring a fresher, more balanced appearance.
Minimally invasive surgery
A neck lift involves repositioning the skin, fat structures and muscles in the area to smooth wrinkles, tighten loose skin and remove the submental fat that contributes to a double chin.
Discreet incisions and deep tensioning
Small incisions are made behind the ears and at specific points behind the hairline, which are camouflaged. These incisions enable access to the tissues beneath the skin in order to lift and tighten the platysma, the muscle that runs from the lower jawline to the collarbone and whose role is to tighten the skin of the neck.
Tightening and fat removal
In addition to tightening the platysma, excess fat is removed by superficial liposuction to improve the area aesthetically and make the supporting structures lighter and more resistant to gravity. The salivary glands are also repositioned if they protrude too far, resulting in a slimmer neck.
Complementary therapies after surgery
Discomfort and complications are minimised thanks to the multidisciplinary approach and a personalised post-operative plan. The return to social and working life can take two to three weeks, and the results are consolidated after the first month.
Hyperbaric medicine to enhance recovery
Treatment in a hyperbaric chamber accelerates recovery by increasing tissue oxygenation. It promotes healing and reduces inflammation and the risk of infection. It also helps to minimise bruising and oedema, which improves post-operative comfort and optimises the final aesthetic result.

A guide to understanding neck lift surgery
A neck lift is one of the most requested procedures among patients over the age of 50 and one of those that delivers the highest levels of patient satisfaction. It’s a surgical intervention designed to rejuvenate the cervical area by addressing neck sagging and wrinkles caused by skin laxity and weakening of the supporting tissues, as well as the appearance of jowls and a double chin due to fat accumulation beneath the chin and along the lower jawline.
Indications for a neck lift
A neck lift is usually recommended when non-surgical treatments are no longer sufficient to achieve a truly significant rejuvenating effect. There is no specific age at which a neck lift should be performed, as tissue sagging isn’t solely related to ageing; it’s also common in patients who have experienced significant weight fluctuations.
Specialists at the Grupo Pedro Jaén Plastic, Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgery Unit assess each case individually. Surgery is indicated in cases of moderate to severe flaccidity and may be combined with other rejuvenation techniques when necessary to achieve a more comprehensive and satisfying improvement for the patient.

What does the procedure involve?
A neck lift requires repositioning the skin, fat structures and muscles in the cervical area, eliminating wrinkles, sagging tissue (commonly referred to as jowls), and submental fat that worsens the appearance of a double chin. To do this, small incisions are made behind the ears and at specific points behind the hairline, where they’re fully concealed once healing is complete.
These incisions allow the surgeon to access the tissues beneath the skin in order to lift and tighten the platysma, a wide, flat muscle located at a deep level that extends from the lower jawline to the collarbone and plays a role in neck tension and movement.
Ideally, in addition to tightening the platysma, excess fat covering the muscle is removed using superficial liposuction, which improves the aesthetic result and makes the supporting structures lighter and therefore more resistant to the effects of gravity.
In cases where the salivary glands located in the anterior part of the neck protrude excessively, the neck lift can be completed by repositioning them. This reduces volume in the area and helps achieve a slimmer, more refined neck contour.
The neck lift procedure is performed in the operating theatre, usually under local anaesthesia and sedation, although general anaesthesia may be used in selected cases.
Results of neck lift surgery
The results of a neck lift are immediate and are reflected in a smoother, firmer and more stylised neck, as well as a more clearly defined jawline thanks to the correction of jowls—two areas of sagging soft tissue that appear on either side of the chin and represent one of the earliest signs of facial laxity.
The initial result can be observed immediately in the operating theatre. Surgeons at Grupo Pedro Jaén intentionally lift the tissues with a certain degree of overcorrection so that, as they settle over the following weeks, they naturally descend into their final, harmonious position.
A specific compression dressing is usually applied for a few days to facilitate drainage and the reabsorption of bruising. In some cases, bruising can be reduced more quickly with pulsed dye laser treatment, available at our Laser Unit.
