How it works
A guide to understanding the Lymphology Unit
Lymphology is a medical discipline dedicated to the study of the lymphatic system, a network of organs, lymph nodes and lymphatic vessels responsible for producing and transporting lymph—a protein-rich fluid that also carries lymphocytes—from body tissues to the bloodstream.
Lymphologists, the specialists in this medical field, are responsible for diagnosing and treating diseases and disorders resulting from dysfunction of the lymphatic system. They also coordinate patient care with other professionals, such as lymph therapists, plastic surgeons, vascular surgeons, endocrinologists and aesthetic medicine physicians, who manage associated conditions or concomitant alterations.
Patients attending the Lymphology Unit most commonly present with arm swelling following breast cancer treatment. However, many also seek consultation for swollen legs or an increase in volume in the lower part of the body that causes visible changes in body contour.
In these situations, it is essential to carry out a thorough assessment in order to establish a specific medical diagnosis, enabling the selection of the most appropriate treatment for each case in an effective and safe manner.
This evaluation allows differentiation between venous oedema, lymphatic oedema and pathological accumulation of adipose tissue. Each of these medical conditions requires a specific and individualised treatment approach, which is key to therapeutic success, optimal clinical outcomes and patient satisfaction.
The Lymphology Unit at Grupo Pedro Jaén is primarily dedicated to the management of lymphoedema and lipoedema, two clinical entities that may appear similar at first glance but have different clinical presentations and therefore require distinct and specific therapeutic approaches.
