Lymphoedema associated with cancer therapies is a highly limiting and incurable complication characterised by the accumulation of fluid in areas of the body close to lymphatic vessels and lymph nodes affected by oncological treatment.

Although it may occur in any part of the body, it most commonly affects the limbs, particularly the arms following lymph node removal (lymphadenectomy) in breast cancer.

Early detection

Although sentinel lymph node biopsy has significantly reduced the incidence of lymphoedema following removal of lymph nodes in the axilla, groin or abdomen, treatments such as radiotherapy may still trigger this condition in the limbs. Early detection and appropriate management are essential to prevent complications.

Preventive surgery for lymphoedema

The Grupo Pedro Jaén Lymphology Unit works closely with the Plastic, Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgery Unit to identify lymphatic impairment and take preventive action in relation to lymphoedema.
This approach, available in very few centres worldwide due to its high level of complexity and technical and human resource requirements, involves performing highly precise surgery to reconstruct lymphatic vessels before irreversible deterioration occurs. This allows adequate lymphatic drainage to be ensured once both the tumour and the affected lymph nodes have been removed and treated.

Detailed diagnosis

Our Lymphology Unit performs a comprehensive diagnostic assessment based on clinical history, physical examination and tests such as bioelectrical impedance analysis and ultrasound. This evaluation allows lipoedema to be identified and differentiated from other conditions, including lymphoedema or cellulite.

Multidisciplinary approach and advanced treatments

Management of lipoedema involves dietary measures, physical activity, rehabilitation and complementary therapies. For this reason, treatment is delivered in collaboration with the Endocrinology and Nutrition, Body Aesthetics and Beauty and Wellbeing Units, ensuring a comprehensive approach that addresses both clinical and aesthetic aspects.

In addition, we offer advanced technologies and aesthetic treatments aimed at reducing fat accumulation in the lower body and mitigating associated changes such as cellulite, stretch marks and post-liposuction skin laxity.

Lipoedema surgery

Surgical treatment for lipoedema involves a specific liposuction technique known as WAL (Water-Assisted Liposuction). This method is less invasive than conventional liposuction and more respectful of venous and lymphatic structures, allowing effective removal of the pathological fat characteristic of lipoedema.
