Facial and body skin tightening systems

Skin tightening systems are an effective option to combat mild to moderate skin laxity, as well as for patients who do not need or do not wish to undergo surgery. They are ideal for people who have lost weight or wish to improve firmness in areas prone to flaccidity. The specialists at the Grupo Pedro Jaén Facial Aesthetics and Body Aesthetics units have extensive experience in the use of these skin tightening systems, which can also be complemented with other rejuvenation treatments available at our centre.

What sets us apart

Treatments tailored to each patient

Skin tightening systems combat flaccidity by repositioning tissues and also improve skin quality thanks to their ability to stimulate collagen and elastin production. This enables comprehensive rejuvenation to be achieved without surgery.

Guide to understanding skin tightening systems

Treatment with skin tightening systems is performed by inserting these thread-like devices into the deep dermis using very fine needles and cannulas. A vector network is previously drawn on the patient’s face or body area to define the precise pathway the devices will follow beneath the skin.

These skin tightening devices are introduced through a small entry point that requires only a minimal amount of topical anaesthesia. The thread is guided into position using a needle and, once correctly placed, it is anchored by small fixation elements attached to the device. The needle is then removed.

The specialist applies controlled traction to reposition the skin tissues, producing an immediate lifting effect. This effect continues to improve over the following weeks, as the presence of the device stimulates the synthesis of collagen and elastin around it.

Results of skin tightening systems

The outcome is a visible improvement in early facial laxity and a significant correction of more advanced sagging. In addition, there is a notable improvement in overall skin quality, achieving a more even tone and enhanced luminosity.

Wrinkles are softened, resulting in a fresher and more rested anti-ageing appearance. The tightening effect is progressive and typically lasts 12 to 18 months, or even longer depending on several factors, such as complementary treatments, skincare routines at home and lifestyle habits that influence skin firmness and quality. Specifically, the effects of skin tightening systems can be observed in the following areas:

Effects of treatment with skin tightening systems

Short- and medium-term lifting effect

The tension generated by the system, together with the mild dermal oedema along its pathway, produces an immediate lifting effect. As the swelling subsides, it is gradually replaced by newly formed collagen, resulting in a progressive tightening effect that reaches its maximum between four and six months.

Skin quality

This treatment enhances microcirculation in the treated area and stimulates cellular regeneration, increasing collagen synthesis over several months, which corresponds to the time required for the devices to be reabsorbed. Tissue regeneration directly translates into a clear improvement in skin quality.

Luminosity

The skin acquires a healthier tone and a more radiant appearance due to improved tissue oxygenation.

Wrinkles and folds

Deeper wrinkles are softened and fine lines become less visible as fibroblasts migrate and collagen production increases.

Treatment outcomes

Although an improvement in skin laxity is visible immediately after the session, the most significant results appear from the fourth to the sixth month, when maximum tissue tightening and redensification are achieved.

The benefits of new collagen formation can last 18 months or longer, depending on each patient’s ageing process and overall skin care. After this period, adjunctive procedures such as ultrasound treatments or injections of collagen stimulators may be performed if the patient wishes.

“In general, the best outcomes are achieved by combining different therapeutic options and initiating treatment at an early stage”

Advantages of skin tightening systems

Skin tightening systems are made of biocompatible materials with well-established safety profiles, as they have traditionally been used in medical sutures, including intracardiac sutures. As a result, they do not cause rejection, encapsulation or migration.

They are progressively resorbable and can be reapplied once they have been fully absorbed, usually 18 to 24 months after placement.

In addition, this minimally invasive treatment does not require surgical incisions or sutures. Patients can resume their daily activities almost immediately, as discomfort is minimal and easily managed with local cold application and common anti-inflammatory medication. No specific recovery measures are required beyond avoiding massage of the treated area during the first few days, refraining from intense physical exercise and avoiding facial treatments that could compromise the integrity of the implanted devices.

Indications for this treatment

Skin tightening systems are ideal for cases of mild to moderate skin laxity or to delay its onset for as long as possible. They are particularly suitable for patients who do not need or do not wish to undergo surgery.

However, patients should be informed that in cases of severe laxity or when treatment is delayed, surgical intervention, such as a conventional facelift, may be the most appropriate option. These procedures are also performed using minimally invasive surgical techniques.

Information on facial lifting using skin-tightening systems

Prior to undergoing treatment, a thorough medical assessment is essential. This includes evaluation of skin quality, tissue thickness, volume distribution, and degree of laxity, as not all faces respond in the same way and not all patients are suitable candidates. Appropriate patient selection is key to achieving natural and harmonious results.

The procedure is performed in a clinical setting under local anaesthesia and typically lasts between 45 and 60 minutes, depending on the areas treated. Following the session, mild swelling, slight initial asymmetry, or a sensation of tightness may occur; these are expected effects and usually resolve within a few days. During the first week, patients are advised to avoid exaggerated facial movements, excessive manipulation of the treated area, and high-intensity physical exercise.

The outcome combines an immediate mechanical lifting effect with a progressive biological response of the tissue itself, contributing to improved firmness over the following weeks. In some cases, it may be complemented with other medical treatments (such as biostimulation, neuromodulators, or energy-based devices) as part of a personalised, comprehensive facial rejuvenation plan.

Medical follow-up allows for assessment of progress and determination of whether adjustments or additional treatments are required to optimise and maintain the results.

Skin tightening systems for body laxity

Following their success in facial treatments, resorbable skin tightening systems have also been widely adopted for the treatment of body laxity, achieving good results in areas such as the inner arms, inner thighs, upper knees, neck, décolletage, umbilical area and abdomen.

These body skin tightening systems are also made of fully biocompatible, resorbable materials, minimising the risk of allergic reactions or rejection.

The devices are placed beneath the skin in a mesh-like pattern to reinforce key anchoring points from which tissue tightening is required. Initially, they produce a mild inflammatory response followed by fibrosis, which firms and retracts the tissues, providing an immediate improvement in laxity.

In addition, this treatment stimulates the production of new collagen and elastin, which are responsible for improving skin firmness and elasticity in the medium and long term.

After body skin tightening treatment

After the placement of body threads, local cold application may be used to reduce inflammation and discomfort. This effect is temporary and usually resolves within one or two days.

Occasionally, a bruise may appear, which can be easily treated with topical medication or, if necessary, with laser treatment available at our centre, capable of reabsorbing bruises within approximately 24 hours.

For one month following treatment, it is advisable to avoid deep or intense massage in the treated area.

In summary, skin tightening systems are easy to apply in a clinical setting and represent an excellent alternative for restoring skin tone and regenerating tissues that are beginning to show early signs of laxity. They help the skin regain vitality, elasticity and luminosity through a natural lifting effect.
