A guide to understanding body flaccidity

Body flaccidity is defined as a cutaneous dysfunction characterised by the loss of collagen and elastin, the structural elements responsible for skin firmness and support. It is a condition primarily associated with ageing, although it may be exacerbated by hormonal changes, sudden weight fluctuations, a sedentary lifestyle, poor nutritional habits, smoking or excessive sun exposure.

All these factors contribute to a reduction in cellular metabolism and a decrease in the number of fibroblasts—the cells responsible for collagen production. As a result, the normal trophism of the dermis and its natural renewal capacity are diminished, leading to a progressive loss of firmness, elasticity and skin tightness.

Causes of body flaccidity

As outlined above, ageing is the main cause of body flaccidity. However, several additional factors should be taken into account in order to minimise its impact.

Excessive sun exposure

Sun exposure is one of the main causes of skin ageing and is also directly linked to the development of skin cancer. Ultraviolet radiation damages the epidermis and accelerates the appearance of wrinkles, pigmentation changes and skin laxity—not only on the face. Although thicker and more resistant, body skin is also affected, as UV radiation penetrates deeply into the dermis, degrading collagen and elastin fibres that provide structural support to the tissues.

Hormonal changes

Menstruation, pregnancy, breastfeeding and menopause expose women to significant hormonal fluctuations that directly influence collagen production. When oestrogen levels decline—particularly during menopause—the body produces less collagen, leading to a loss of tissue support and an increased tendency towards skin sagging.

Significant weight fluctuations

Sudden weight changes cause stretching of the skin that may not be fully reversible, resulting in cutaneous flaccidity. Pregnancy is the most representative example, as it combines mechanical skin stretching with hormonal changes that negatively affect skin firmness. This phenomenon is also observed after very restrictive diets or any situation involving rapid and substantial weight loss.

Unhealthy lifestyle habits

Smoking, poor diet and physical inactivity are associated with a deterioration in skin quality and an increased tendency towards flaccidity. Diets lacking sufficient high-quality protein interfere with collagen and elastin synthesis. Physical inactivity contributes to reduced muscle tone and impaired circulation—both closely linked to skin health and appearance. Smoking, meanwhile, decreases oxygen and essential nutrient delivery to the skin, further accelerating tissue laxity.

Below are some of the main treatments used to address body flaccidity in areas such as the abdomen, legs, thighs, buttocks and arms

Radiofrequency

Radiofrequency is one of the most established treatments in both facial and body aesthetics and one of the most effective allies against body flaccidity. At the Body Aesthetics Unit and the Beauty and Wellbeing Unit, we use some of the most advanced and effective radiofrequency devices available to ensure optimal results.

Radiofrequency is a non-invasive, painless treatment that generates localised diathermy within the tissues. Its effectiveness is based on controlled tissue heating induced by a high-frequency electrical or electromagnetic field, increasing temperature from within the cells themselves. Heat intensity is adjusted according to the treated area and aesthetic concern, producing a pleasant and relaxing sensation for the patient.

This process stimulates the body’s natural production of collagen and elastin, improving skin elasticity, hydration and smoothness, while promoting tissue regeneration. It can be applied to the abdomen, thighs, flanks, buttocks and legs to reduce oedema, alleviate the sensation of heavy legs, refine the silhouette and significantly improve skin quality.

The application of radiofrequency energy makes it possible to reach the deeper layers of the dermis, acting directly on the fibres responsible for skin firmness. This causes the fibres to contract and stimulate collagen production, resulting in skin tightening while also nourishing and revitalising the dermis.

Ultrasound

Focused ultrasound treatment works by inducing controlled heating in the deep layers of the skin, stimulating collagen production—the key protein responsible for skin firmness.

This technology produces a dual effect: it causes immediate tissue contraction that naturally tightens the skin, while simultaneously stimulating collagen synthesis in the deeper layers, toning and renewing the skin from within without affecting the surface. In this way, it improves body flaccidity in a non-invasive manner, without the use of electrical currents, needles or surgery.

The treatment can be repeated after several months and combined with other procedures, such as skin tightening systems or the infiltration of collagen stimulators, to enhance and prolong results.

Resorbable skin tightening systems

Following their success in facial treatments, resorbable skin tightening systems are also used to treat body flaccidity, achieving very good results in areas such as the inner arms, inner thighs and abdomen. These systems are made from fully biocompatible, resorbable materials, minimising the risk of allergic reactions or tissue rejection.

The tightening devices are placed beneath the skin in a mesh-like pattern, reinforcing specific anchoring points to achieve tissue lifting. Initially, they induce a mild inflammatory response followed by controlled fibrosis, which tightens and retracts the tissues, producing an immediate firming effect. In addition, this treatment stimulates the production of new collagen and elastin, responsible for improving skin firmness and elasticity in the medium and long term.

Other treatments for body flaccidity

Carboxytherapy

Carboxytherapy is a medical technique consisting of the administration of microinjections of medicinal carbon dioxide (CO₂) beneath the skin. The gas is injected using a very fine needle and diffuses into the surrounding tissues, causing a temporary oedema and mild redness.

This treatment enhances tissue oxygenation, improves local circulation, stimulates the formation and reorganisation of collagen and elastin fibres, reduces fibrosis and activates lipolysis (fat breakdown). As a result, it improves skin appearance, tone and texture, increases dermal thickness, improves the appearance of cellulite-affected skin, reduces flaccidity and decreases fatty tissue.

Endermology (LPG)

This device applies a mechanical massage combined with suction, producing a clear draining effect. It also improves circulation and contributes to skin firming. As it does not use electrical currents or heat, it is suitable for all types of patients, including during pregnancy.
